Reuters reported on the 16th local time that Anthropic signed its first data center lease agreement in Australia.

The agreement involves a large computing park with a planned capacity of 2.16GW, located about 250 kilometers west of Brisbane, and is expected to be developed by Singapore-based developer Zerra DC. The data center will purchase renewable energy power and independently bear the grid connection costs.

The operation of artificial intelligence infrastructure involves significant energy consumption, and power supply capacity is one of the key factors in selecting a data center location. Australia, which is vast and sparsely populated with abundant renewable resources, is one of the ideal regions for computing infrastructure - OpenAI also signed an agreement last year to build a data center in Australia.

However, there are also opposing voices in the country, and the Australian government has pledged to set limits on data center resource usage starting in 2027.
