Instagram announced governance regulations on August 31, 2026, officially renaming the "AI Creator" label to "AI-Generated Profiles" and implementing coverage restrictions on accounts that are not clearly declared as AI-generated or created in large quantities.

According to the new policy, content from non-compliant AI-generated accounts will have reduced recommendations and exposure; creators who actively use the new label will not be penalized solely for using an AI-generated persona as their account's main identity. However, this regulation does not apply indiscriminately to all AI technologies. Users who only use AI for photo editing, text polishing, or creative adjustments do not need to compulsorily wear this label.

This policy adjustment focuses on addressing the crisis of account authenticity caused by the rise of generative AI. Recently, social platforms have frequently seen virtual influencers generated by AI, which not only involve illegal traffic diversion but also include hundreds of AI-generated "virtual doctors and health celebrities" promoting health products and making health statements, seriously disrupting the community ecosystem.

Previously, Meta faced strong user protests over an AI tool that allowed generating images using others' likenesses and had to withdraw the feature. Additionally, it recently reached an $18 billion settlement with U.S. states to address accusations regarding the impact of social platforms on teenagers. The platform is now facing unprecedented regulatory and credibility pressures.

As generative AI significantly lowers the threshold for building virtual personalities, content transparency has become a core requirement for compliance governance among major platforms. Instagram, by using a more intuitive "AI-Generated Profile" label combined with a traffic penalty mechanism, ensures users' right to know and defines the compliance boundaries for AI-assisted creation.

This move marks that mainstream social platforms are accelerating the reshaping of digital person and virtual influencer operational rules, pushing the AI-generated content (AIGC) industry toward a more standardized and transparent development stage.
