Meta, the social media giant, plans to launch a new round of layoffs globally on Wednesday local time, with an estimated reduction of about 10% of its workforce. Based on the total number of employees as of March 31, this adjustment will affect approximately 7,800 employees, making it one of the largest restructuring efforts in the tech industry recently.
Jennifer Gail, Meta's Chief Human Resources Officer, clearly stated in an internal memo that, in addition to direct layoffs and the cancellation of some management positions, the company will transfer 7,000 employees to new projects related to artificial intelligence workflows. This move aims to comprehensively optimize the company's artificial intelligence architecture, achieving faster response times and stronger autonomy through flatter organizational teams.
Strong Push for AI Agent Development
The transferred employees will mainly join core teams such as AI engineering and the AI Agent Accelerator. These newly established departments are part of the core of Meta's "AI Empowered Work" program, with the ultimate goal of developing AI agents capable of autonomously performing tasks currently carried out by humans.
To advance this speculative AI strategic transformation, Meta has even forcibly installed mouse tracking software on employees' computers to train new AI models. This radical monitoring method, along with the harsh reality of "replacing employees with their work," has sparked unprecedented resistance within the company.
Internal Protests Continue to Escalate
Over 1,000 Meta employees have already signed a joint petition, publicly opposing the management's monitoring and layoff plans. Some employees have urged executives to face this major workplace crisis by posting flyers in the office and sending elephant emojis on internal communication platforms.
