OpenAI Again Postpones Controversial Feature: Resources Prioritized for Personalization and Proactive Interaction
In the AI community, whether "inappropriate content" should become part of productivity has always been a controversial topic. Promising to make ChatGPT more understanding of adults, OpenAI has once again poured cold water on users who were looking forward to it. According to IT Home, OpenAI recently confirmed that the "Adult Mode," originally scheduled to launch in the first quarter of 2026, will be postponed again.
This is not the first time Sam Altman has failed to keep his promise. As early as the end of 2025, Altman proposed the principle of treating adults as adults, intending to relax restrictions on explicit content and planning to launch it in December. However, this plan was suddenly halted internally, with resources quickly redirected to more core experience upgrades. Now, as the first quarter of 2026 approaches its end, the company still hasn't provided a clear timeline.
An OpenAI spokesperson responded in a very "official" and rational manner. He said that the company's top priority right now is to improve AI's intelligence level, enhance dialogue personality, and make interactions more proactive and personalized. In other words: if you want to see "explicit" content, wait until the AI has improved its intelligence and refined the overall experience first.
However, don't think OpenAI has completely given up on this popular feature. Code archaeologists discovered a string called "Naughty Chats (Playful Conversations)" in the new version of ChatGPT. The description indicates that this setting allows the AI to use more adult-themed language when requested, and it is only available for users aged 18 and above.
To ensure that minors are not "misled," OpenAI launched an age prediction tool in January of this year. This system can infer your age by analyzing your chat frequency and usage time. If you are identified as a minor, sorry, even if the adult mode is eventually released, you will have to complete identity verification through a selfie to access it.
From "much anticipated" to "repeatedly postponed," OpenAI's hesitation reflects the difficult struggle between commercial interests and ethical boundaries for top AI companies. Although the more "understanding" ChatGPT is delayed, a smarter and more proactive AI partner may be worth waiting for more than just sensory stimulation.
