On July 24, an Indian court ruled in a copyright dispute between the news agency ANI and OpenAI, determining that OpenAI's use of ANI news content for training artificial intelligence models does not constitute copyright infringement, and confirmed that the Indian court has jurisdiction over the case.

This case originated from ANI, one of India's largest news agencies, which had previously sued OpenAI, accusing it of using its news reports without authorization to train AI models and requesting restrictions on the use of related data. During the trial, the Indian court found that ANI failed to provide sufficient evidence to prove that its original news content actually appeared in ChatGPT-generated responses, and therefore did not support its claim of copyright infringement.

The court also confirmed that, although OpenAI is headquartered in the United States, since ChatGPT services are available in India, the related copyright dispute falls within the jurisdiction of the Indian court. This means that the Indian judicial system will continue to participate in discussions on data usage rules between global AI companies and content providers.

In recent years, issues regarding the copyright of AI training data have become a major focal point of controversy in the global artificial intelligence industry. Content producers, including news agencies, publishers, and photo companies, generally pay attention to whether generative AI companies should obtain permission before using publicly available content for model training; while AI companies argue that large-scale data learning is an essential foundation for model capabilities.

Previously, copyright lawsuits related to AI training data have emerged in regions such as the United States and Europe. Although India's ruling does not fully resolve the rules for AI training data copyrights, it provides new judicial references for related disputes.

As large models continue to develop, how to balance AI innovation, data utilization efficiency, and content creators' rights will remain an issue that needs to be continuously addressed in the commercialization process of the global AI industry.
