OpenAI has recently officially announced through its official channels that it has made a major upgrade to the macOS version of the ChatGPT application, fully adding deep control and interaction capabilities with Apple's native "Messages" app.

In terms of core features, after obtaining explicit user authorization, the upgraded ChatGPT can directly read, write, and send text messages on the Mac, and supports intelligent search of a large amount of chat history as well as quick generation of conversation summaries. OpenAI emphasized that this feature does not perform a global index of all user messages during design, and the entire process highly depends on user's active authorization and local system integration.

To smoothly enable this new interactive experience, users need to complete multiple necessary authorizations within the app and in the relevant privacy settings of the Apple operating system. During the initial setup, ChatGPT will pop up a window explaining that it will access the message history saved on the computer, and users must also go to the "System Settings" on their Mac to enable full disk access permissions, and allow it to use contact names and automation management tools.

Regarding this feature update, Mark Gurman, a well-known reporter at Bloomberg, publicly expressed his keen industry insights. He believes that OpenAI's move not only breaks through the barriers of Apple's desktop-level system applications but also directly delves into Apple's core private territory. In the future, it is very likely to pose a direct competition and challenge to Apple's upcoming Siri AI capabilities and its unique device advantages across the entire ecosystem.
