Meta released the open-source model Muse Glimmer on August 10, aimed at supporting local AI agents on consumer-grade hardware, representing the latest implementation of its "Personal Superintelligence" vision. The model has 30 billion parameters and is essentially an open version of Meta's closed model Muse Spark, released in April this year. The model weights are released under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing developers to download, modify, and fine-tune them.
Muse Glimmer is designed for multi-step agent tasks, capable of calling tools, writing and debugging code, handling files and screenshots, and executing extended workflows. The model supports text and images, and its training covers over 100 languages. It can run locally on a Mac or PC with a single consumer-grade GPU, and is designed to be "always-on," working even without an internet connection.
Meta envisions its use in managing schedules, writing emails, organizing files, and other tasks that require processing large amounts of personal data. By processing information locally, it reduces the need to upload data to the cloud, exploring more privacy-focused personal AI assistants.
This approach aligns with Zuckerberg's previous "Personal Superintelligence" concept. In a new public letter released on August 10, he stated that widespread access to superintelligence could empower individuals and hopes that related tools will eventually be available for free or at an affordable price. However, Meta still differentiates between open and closed models: the more powerful Muse Spark remains closed, while Glimmer allows users to download and run it locally, showing its layered strategy between AI openness and model control.
