According to tech media, Amazon is secretly advancing an advanced AI agent project codenamed "Moonraker," aimed at enabling the smart voice assistant Alexa to perform complex tasks in a connected manner. As an extension of the current generative AI assistant Alexa Plus, Moonraker breaks the previous limitation of responding to only one command at a time, allowing it to deeply understand complex requests and automatically execute multiple related operations in a logical sequence.

For example, users can issue a single command, and the system can complete multi-step workflows such as "calling a ride-hailing service" and "sending a text message to a friend." This technological upgrade marks that Alexa is evolving from a traditional "question-and-answer" voice assistant into a true digital personal assistant capable of handling complex, multi-step tasks.

Currently, Amazon is testing the system using advanced AI models provided by Anthropic, and has prepared hundreds of NVIDIA GPUs to support more advanced reasoning and visual capabilities. However, this ambitious strategic move has also brought significant financial and technical challenges to Amazon.

Internal planning documents show that the GPU hardware costs for the Moonraker project alone in 2026 will exceed $100 million, making it the most expensive project in the Alexa Plus upgrade plan. Given the sharp rise in the computing costs of large models, as well as technical bottlenecks such as hallucinations and behavioral anomalies encountered during earlier tests, Amazon executives have had disagreements over the project's massive spending and have proposed contingency plans to delay or scale back the project.

Despite the cost pressures and technical adjustments, recent data disclosed by Amazon CEO Andy Jassy shows positive signals for commercial transformation: the frequency of use of Alexa Plus has reached twice that of before, and the number of orders placed through the assistant has increased threefold. Currently, global tech giants such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are accelerating their efforts in the agentic AI field. The advancement of the Moonraker project not only reflects Amazon's close follow-up to the trend of technological evolution but also represents its key battle to seize the next generation of human-computer interaction access points.
