Recently, SpaceX revealed in its initial public offering (IPO) filing that it faces a serious shortage of AI chips during the process of advancing its orbital AI strategy. The company stated that the current supply of AI hardware is far from sufficient to support its ambitious plans. This challenge has forced SpaceX to rely on temporary procurement, further increasing the risks it faces.

To address this crisis, SpaceX plans to collaborate with Tesla and xAI to build the Terafab wafer factory, aiming to alleviate the chip shortage. However, the filing also pointed out that the project carries the risk of failure, and the partners Tesla and Intel are not committed to long-term participation. This makes the future of the Terafab project full of uncertainty.
SpaceX mentioned in the filing: "Whether we can scale up orbital AI development depends on whether we can obtain enough AI chips." Currently, the tight supply chain and global semiconductor shortage have already affected its normal business operations. In particular, the production and supply of high-end chips are often controlled by only a few qualified suppliers.
To better support its AI projects, SpaceX has established partnerships with graphics processor suppliers such as AMD and NVIDIA, as well as foundries like TSMC and Samsung. However, this has also led the company to face multiple challenges, including insufficient capacity, raw material shortages, and geopolitical risks. Industry experts point out that the current market demand for AI processors far exceeds the supply capacity.
In addition, the site of the Terafab project has been determined in the SpaceX campus in Texas, USA, and it is planned to use Intel's 14A manufacturing process. However, even if Musk plans to invest hundreds of billions of dollars in the project, success cannot be guaranteed. The S-1 filing emphasized that if Tesla or Intel withdraws, Terafab will lose its core customers and technical support, and the project may fail as a result.
SpaceX clearly stated in the document that although it has signed a framework agreement with Tesla, it has not ensured long-term cooperation guarantees, so future supply chain risks still exist.
