OpenAI officially announced on Monday that it will establish its first permanent office in London. The office is located in King’s Cross, a renowned AI industry cluster in London, and is adjacent to major companies such as Google DeepMind and Meta.

The newly signed office space covers an area of 88,500 square feet and is expected to accommodate more than 500 employees. This represents a doubling of OpenAI's current team of around 200 people in London. Phoebe Thacker, head of the OpenAI London site, said that the UK has an exceptionally rich talent pool, and the new office will provide ample space for the company's continued expansion in the region.

After the Setback of the Stargate Infrastructure Project

Notably, just before this announcement, OpenAI had recently confirmed the suspension of its large-scale AI infrastructure project "Stargate" in the UK.

  • Reason for Suspension: Mainly due to the high energy costs in the UK (among the highest in the world) and delays in connecting to the national power grid.

In addition to supporting the expansion of office space, UK officials have even previously proposed attractive schemes such as "dual listings" to attract top AI companies to stay.

Currently, the funding enthusiasm in the UK's AI sector continues to rise, with the total financing this year reaching $6.7 billion. OpenAI's deepening efforts in London will undoubtedly further solidify London's position as a global hub for artificial intelligence research.
