OpenAI has announced the availability of the ChatGPT group chat feature to all logged-in users, including free, Go/Plus/Pro versions. Users can click the "Person" icon in the top right corner of a conversation to generate an invitation link. The maximum number of people per group is 20, and it supports real-time synchronization across web and mobile devices.
To adapt to multi-user scenarios, OpenAI has added a "social behavior" fine-tuning to the model: ChatGPT will determine when to interject or remain silent based on context, only responding actively when a user mentions it, to avoid information noise; the Personal Memory of the group creator is fully locally encrypted and not shared with any members.

The official use cases cover weekend trip planning, backyard garden design, project brainstorming, restaurant voting, debate judging, and document integration. All messages within the group are still subject to a 30-day automatic deletion policy. API and plugin calls are not yet supported for simultaneous use by multiple people, but shared links, images, and files can already be read.
OpenAI stated that the next step will be to launch the "Group Recap" and "To-Do List" features based on feedback, and plans to introduce "ChatGPT Team Rooms" for enterprises in Q1 2026, supporting up to 200 people, administrator audits, and knowledge base integration.
