Meta was recently reported to have partnered with Chinese robotics company Fourier Intelligence. In just three months, the two sides successfully built the first humanoid robot prototype, codenamed “Max,” and in September officially began R&D on the second-generation product, Max2.
The prototype is about 1.5 meters tall and weighs about 48 kilograms. It is powered by Nvidia’s Jetson Thor chip and equipped with a facial screen that can simulate human expressions, a speaker, and a five-fingered robotic hand. It supports recognizing sound from 5 meters away and understanding gestures from 3 meters away.
Meta Chief Technology Officer Andrew Bosworth previously described the humanoid robot internally as the physical form of the company’s consumer AI agent product, Muse. During the R&D period, Li-Chen Miller, Meta’s Vice President of Product for Robotics, spent nearly two months stationed at a Shanghai factory to advance the project. The upcoming Max2 is planned to upgrade the torso and robotic hand, and add a projector and stair sensors.
This move marks that Meta is accelerating the extension of software agent capabilities into real physical environments and actively positioning itself in the consumer-grade embodied intelligence track.
