According to The Information's exclusive report, OpenAI is discussing a major plan to authorize the Sora technology to a new AI video startup through equity partnerships, reviving the previously shut down Sora.

The startup was co-founded by Bill Peebles, former Sora research leader, Jeffrey Katzenberg, co-founder of DreamWorks Animation, and Sujay Jaswa, former CFO of Dropbox. According to the current negotiation plan, OpenAI will grant the startup access to deep customization of the underlying model beyond standard APIs in exchange for a portion of the company's equity (both parties are still negotiating core details such as model weights). This marks a shift in Sora's commercialization strategy from a consumer-facing general-purpose product to a B-end ecosystem targeting Hollywood and professional film production markets.

Previously, Sora underwent significant strategic adjustments: it was launched in February 2024, went live in December, and planned to release Sora2 in 2025. However, due to high computing costs and OpenAI focusing resources on ChatGPT, coding, and enterprise-level AI as core businesses, the Sora web and app were shut down on April 26, 2026, and the related API was also closed on September 24, even preventing a potential $1 billion investment from Disney.

This lightweight revival plan allows OpenAI to leverage existing technological assets without diverting core large model resources, while also sharing future commercial returns. It also explores new possibilities for the application of AI video technology in specialized vertical fields.
