A 16-year-old boy in Canada got stuck on a steep rock face after mistakenly entering a dangerous climbing area while using the AI assistant Claude to plan a hiking route. He was eventually rescued by a helicopter from the search and rescue team.
Entering a Dangerous Area and the Rescue Process
On the morning of October 3 local time, the boy left Vancouver, originally planning to go hiking at Crown Mountain. Having previously reached the summit, he tried to use Claude to plan a new hiking route. However, during his journey, he mistakenly took the "Widowmaker Arete," which requires professional ropes and climbing equipment, as his intended route.
As the terrain became extremely steep, the boy found himself unable to return safely after climbing a section without any equipment. He was stuck on a rock ledge about 5 feet wide. After contacting his mother and calling the police, the local volunteer search and rescue team (North Shore Rescue) quickly sent a helicopter to rescue him using rope techniques.
Reasonable Attitude and Safety Warning
After the incident, the boy told an interviewer that he did not blame the AI and felt responsible for choosing the wrong route. He also mentioned that he had referred to other tools like Google Maps. Paul Markey, head of the search and rescue team, reminded all hikers that AI does not understand real geographical terrain and can never replace the experience, common sense, and traditional map navigation skills of hikers in the wild. He warned people not to blindly rely on large models for high-risk outdoor route planning.
