Google has announced the opening of the Gemini Skills custom command service to all free account users, breaking the previous restriction that this feature was limited to Pro and Ultra paid subscription tiers.

According to the plan, the original Gems feature will automatically transition and integrate into the Skills system on November 17, 2026. Previously, Gems allowed users to run specific queries by creating custom commands, but its interaction method required users to scroll through a large list, resulting in low overall efficiency. The upgraded Skills have significantly optimized the operational logic while retaining the original custom configuration capabilities.

Users can now quickly activate specific skills by typing a slash “/” and the corresponding command within the main Gemini chat box, providing a more convenient and direct interaction experience compared to Gems. In the initial phase of Google's decision to discontinue support for Gems, free users had concerns about losing their functionality without an alternative solution. However, the latest adjustment confirms that free Gemini account holders can not only retain their existing custom configurations but also continue creating new Skills via a dedicated link, smoothly passing through the system migration period in November.
