During an interview with CBS News yesterday, NVIDIA co-founder and CEO Huang Renxun stated that he does not agree with the claims made by some researchers that "AI could extinct humanity within a few years." He believes such statements are exaggerated AI apocalyptic narratives.

Huang Renxun said, "2030 will not be the end of the world. The possibility of it being the end of the world is 0%. It's irresponsible and unnecessary to scare people."

Responding to Coxon: Such Predictions Lack Scientific Basis

Huang Renxun's remarks came in response to the views of former Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon. Coxon previously stated that both Anthropic and OpenAI's approaches are irresponsible — they are racing to develop super-intelligent systems capable of self-improvement, risking human lives. This strong statement sparked widespread discussion, with AI leaders like Amodei and Altman calling for a slowdown in cutting-edge AI development.

However, Huang Renxun does not agree with these predictions because they lack scientific basis. NVIDIA provides computing power for large models of companies like OpenAI, and clearly has a stake in this debate — driven by strong demand for chips, NVIDIA's market value once reached $5.3 trillion (approximately 35.61 trillion Chinese yuan), making it the world's most valuable company. Huang Renxun said, "Our company's success is closely related to our products and services, as well as secure deployment. If we cannot continue to maintain safety, our value will decrease."

He believes that existing product liability laws in the United States and laws against unauthorized network intrusions are already sufficient, and there is no need to enact additional regulations to govern AI developers, and he agrees with the president's view that the AI industry does not need extra regulation. "Cybersecurity and damage liability laws cover various situations; the first step should be to enforce these laws. Don't let apocalyptic narratives become an excuse for some people to escape existing legal constraints."

"There's Nothing I Enjoy More Than Paying More Taxes"

When talking about the competition between China and the US in AI, Huang Renxun said that the technology created by the US should first benefit its own people, but he opposed the government banning the export of American tech products to China: "Every chip company should go global and serve globally, competing in the global market. America is meant to compete."

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Huang Renxun currently has a net worth of 182 billion US dollars (approximately 1.22 trillion Chinese yuan), ranking him eighth among the world's richest people. This fall, California will vote on a "billionaire tax," and if passed, residents of California with a net worth of 1 billion US dollars or more will be taxed 5% in one lump sum. Although other billionaires in California generally criticized the proposal, Huang Renxun does not oppose paying billions in additional taxes: "I can afford to pay 8 billion US dollars (approximately 53.747 billion Chinese yuan) in taxes within five years. It is a privilege and a responsibility, and there is nothing I enjoy more than paying more taxes. I am not afraid of paying taxes, only afraid of becoming poor."
