Robotics track has been active recently. Unitree Technology officially announced the launch of its new bionic 7-axis dexterous robotic arm R1 on August 20th, with a starting price of only 9900 yuan. The release of this product further lowers the threshold for high-performance multi-axis robots, drawing widespread attention from the industry and developers.
In terms of hardware design and performance specifications, the R1 robotic arm adopts a seven-axis联动 design, featuring human-like high redundancy degrees of freedom, with a repeat positioning accuracy of approximately 0.1 mm. The maximum motion speed of each joint exceeds 180°/s, and the maximum arm span when equipped with a dexterous hand is 650 mm, with an rated load of 2 kg. The seven-axis structure enables the device to perform flexible operations in confined spaces, allowing the end effector to achieve precise multi-angle adjustment, fully meeting the needs for motion flexibility and path planning.

The overall design also features many highlights. The R1 weighs only 5.5 kg, using a composite structure of metal and high-strength engineering plastic, ensuring high rigidity and anti-deformation capability while achieving a compact and lightweight design. With a desktop-level form factor, the R1 supports "place-and-use", allowing quick deployment in laboratories, teaching tables, or small workstations without complex production line modifications, greatly facilitating efficient debugging and use by developers.
In terms of intelligent collaboration and system scalability, the R1 is equipped with force feedback and collision detection functions, supporting position and torque hybrid control modes, providing reliable safety guarantees for human-robot collaboration and complex contact tasks. On the system level, it is built based on the Ubuntu development environment, featuring XT30 and CAN485 hardware interfaces. The official plan is to gradually open-source the robotic arm control program and control interface. Its end supports rapid replacement of different actuators, allowing users to flexibly switch between grippers, dexterous hands, and other tools according to task requirements.
For specific application scenarios, Unitree has planned four core development directions for the R1: in the fields of scientific research and education, it can serve as a laboratory automation platform for precision operations such as pipetting and sorting; in industrial settings, it supports dual-arm collaboration for material assembly; in smart interaction and body maintenance scenarios, it can be mounted on a mobile platform to perform complex operations such as opening doors; meanwhile, the product is also fully oriented towards service robot applications, capable of simulating life-like tasks such as coffee making.
The official specification sheet also specifically notes that the R1 is positioned as a consumer robot product, and users are advised to avoid dangerous modifications. Due to the low gear ratio of the joints, the overall position control stiffness is relatively limited. If the control strategy is not sufficiently optimized, there may be some position errors during dynamic operations, and users need to conduct targeted debugging based on actual scenarios.
