Reddit is testing a new AI-powered feature that automatically converts text posts and some comments on the platform into audio and video content, exploring new ways to consume content. During the test, some posts will be turned into videos, with AI voice reading the main post and some comments, while the corresponding text is highlighted in sync. Below the video, there will also be a label saying "Real conversation with AI voice," informing users about the content source and generation method.

Test cases show that a post from 8 years ago on "r/boardgames" was adapted into a 3-minute video. The original post discussed "games suitable for adults to play during road trips," with 101 replies. After entering the post, users can switch between text reading and video watching modes by using the "Read" and "Play" options at the top. For users unfamiliar with forum reading, the video may lower the barrier to content consumption, but AI voice may also have issues such as pronunciation errors or inaccurate quoting of comments.
This test aligns with Reddit's recent strategy to move towards video content. The company previously stated in its shareholder letter that it is rethinking how users connect, share, and consume content through modernized video experiences. CEO Steve Huffman also mentioned that Reddit is exploring ways for users to listen to posts in the background. This AI text-to-video attempt could become an important exploration for Reddit to further transform massive community discussions into multimedia content.
