According to internal disclosures from OpenAI, the weekly active users of its chatbot ChatGPT are about to exceed 1 billion. This milestone was originally planned to be achieved by the end of last year, although it is seven months late, it is still one of the fastest-growing products in the global internet application market, as it has accumulated such a user base within less than four years since its launch. The company's spokesperson did not comment on this.
The milestone that was seven months late, the growth engine is shifting gears
There are multiple factors contributing to the slowdown in ChatGPT's user growth. Google's Gemini continues to deeply integrate with search engines that have billions of users, gradually eroding the market from the traffic entry point; the development process of GPT-5, launched last autumn, was fraught with difficulties, and after its release, it faced widespread criticism from a large number of users, directly dragging down the growth curve.
Additionally, data from multiple research institutions show that Anthropic's Claude chatbot has also captured some market share since then. A total of 1 billion users is indeed a strong performance, but the seven-month delay also reveals a reality: the first-mover advantage of ChatGPT is being rapidly diluted, and the AI chatbot market is moving from a monopoly to a multi-player competition.
