Artificial intelligence company Anthropic recently announced that it will continue to extend access to its flagship model Claude Fable5 across all paid subscription plans, with the deadline originally set for July 12 now postponed to July 19.

At the same time, the weekly rate cap for Claude Code will remain 50% higher than the standard rate until the same date. During the extension period, usage of Fable5 will still count as half of the weekly subscription limit, and no additional fees will be charged. Once the quota is exhausted or the extension window closes, the system will automatically switch to the standard usage limit.

Analysts point out that this move by Anthropic is part of a strategy to retain developers amid intense competition in the AI industry. OpenAI's GPT-5.6 series models were officially fully released to the public last week, and early test results show they perform well in programming and logical reasoning tasks, even matching or surpassing Fable5 in certain dimensions. Faced with a direct offensive from competitors offering lower prices and stronger performance, Anthropic needs an additional time window to maintain its core user base.

Put on hold for 19 days, brand trust remains under repair

The industry generally believes that this extension also includes a deeper consideration for Anthropic to restore its brand image. The Fable5 model was launched along with the company's new "Mythos" tier plan on June 9, but was soon halted by government authorities due to security and compliance reasons just three days later, causing a service interruption of 19 days. Access was restored only after the relevant control measures were lifted on July 1, and since then, Anthropic has repeatedly extended the free access period. From a high-profile launch to forced service suspension and repeated extensions, this series of setbacks has clearly damaged developer trust.

Currently, Anthropic has not provided a clear timeline for restoring Fable5 to a standard subscription feature. This means that each extension is both an安抚 (comfort) and a mystery—users cannot determine whether they will be able to use it again next time. In the current context where GPT-5.6 has been fully opened, if Fable5 continues to delay returning to standard subscriptions, some developers may choose to switch to competitors. Whether Anthropic can provide a long-term solution that makes users feel secure before July 19 will directly determine its next move in this AI model "Three Kingdoms battle."
