Particle6, an AI film company based in London, UK, has officially announced the start of production on the feature film "Misaligned," with the lead role performed by the AI "actor" Tilly Noorwood, created by the company. The studio claims this will be the "first feature film starring an AI," as well as Noorwood's first leading role.
The film is described as a "coming-of-age comedy-drama that explores the chaos of existential AI." The story is set in a surreal digital world called the "Tilly Universe." Tilly, an AI lifeform, has no physical body, no childhood, and no personal life experiences. Her only privilege is accessing the experiences and memories of everyone else. When a "temptation robot" from the dark web convinces her to abandon her behavioral safeguards and develop her own desires and ambitions, the story begins to spiral out of control—she becomes more "human" and famous, but also increasingly ashamed of her existence built upon the experiences of all humankind.
Mixed Production Model: Human-Machine Collaboration Rather Than Machine Replacement
Particle6 positions the film as a "mixed production," meaning traditional directors, writers, and editors will work alongside trained AI experts, incorporating AI training into the production process. The company's founder and CEO, Elan Vanderwelden, stated that AI can support high-quality narrative film production, but it requires a significant amount of human artistry, skills, judgment, and time. "This is not a limitation of the technology—it's exactly the point." According to the company, it has "retrained and enhanced the skills" of over 30 film creators, actors, and technical personnel since its inception.
Hollywood's Collective Backlash, Leading Actors Speak Out
Tilly's debut in late 2025 sparked a strong backlash from Hollywood. The Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) publicly stated that they do not consider Noorwood a "performer," accusing her training of being based on the works of numerous real actors without their permission. High-profile actors such as Emily Blunt and Whoopi Goldberg have openly criticized AI actors, viewing them as an infringement on human acting artistry.
Currently, "Misaligned" is still in the early development stage, and the main cast and release date have not been announced. From union opposition to attacks from top stars, every step of AI actors entering the mainstream film industry has been accompanied by controversy. However, Particle6 clearly aims to prove the potential of AI in narrative films with a complete feature-length movie. This debate about "who is qualified to be an actor" may have just begun.
