After tasting success in the smart glasses market, social media giant Meta is preparing to extend the reach of artificial intelligence to more personal clothing accessories. According to a recently leaked internal memo, Meta is currently secretly developing a new AI pendant driven by artificial intelligence and plans to launch full-scale testing next year. This move not only demonstrates Meta's new ambitions in the hardware field but also signals that the AI wearable device market is about to witness a new round of competition among major players.

Technology comes from last year's mysterious acquisition

It is reported that the AI pendant mentioned in the memo is largely based on the research of AI device startup Limitless. Meta secretly acquired it at the end of 2025, and at the time, it clearly stated that this move was to accelerate the development of innovative AI wearable devices. Limitless had previously developed a smart pendant that could be pinned to a shirt or worn as a necklace, with core functions including recording and analyzing users' daily conversations anytime and anywhere, laying a solid technical foundation for the birth of Meta's new hardware.

Major players bet on reversing losses

Although the first generation of AI wearable devices faced issues such as privacy concerns and lack of practicality, which generally failed to win consumer favor, Meta and industry giants like OpenAI have clearly not given up on this field. The memo also revealed that Meta plans to further expand its iconic smart glasses product line and launch an enterprise subscription service simultaneously. Meta clearly hopes that this series of multimodal hardware strategies will completely reverse the billion-dollar loss trend of its Reality Labs department, which focuses on hardware, in recent years.
