The 2026 Google I/O Developer Conference will be held in Mountain View, California on May 19-20. Google is expected to launch the next-generation Gemini 3.2 or 3.5 model and, in collaboration with Samsung, unveil its first Android XR smart glasses codenamed "Jinju," marking the comprehensive restart of its smart hardware product line.

As a core highlight of the conference, the new Gemini model will undergo a lightweight upgrade following the release of Gemini 3.1 Pro in February 2026, with performance expected to be comparable to OpenAI's recently released GPT-5.5. The new model will focus on optimizing edge-side performance and enhancing context handling capabilities, enabling smooth AI functionality on mid-to-low-end Android devices. Additionally, the new intelligent platform "Gemini Spark" is also expected to be unveiled, supporting active operation and cross-app task processing.

In terms of hardware and ecosystem, Google is collaborating with Samsung and Gentle Monster to develop screenless AI glasses and glasses with in-lens display technology, all based on the Android XR system. At the same time, the Android 17 Beta version may open up the edge-side AI capabilities of Gemini Nano, while the new lightweight system Aluminum OS may make its debut, integrating the Android and Chrome OS ecosystems. This indicates that Gemini is evolving from an independent app into a native capability called "Gemini Core" deeply embedded in Gmail, Maps, and the system's underlying layer.

With Alphabet increasing its capital expenditure for the 2026 fiscal year to between $175 billion and $185 billion, Google urgently needs to demonstrate its commercialization capabilities in areas such as search advertising and cloud services through heavy investments in computing power deployment and ecosystem integration. This will also accelerate the transition of AI from a tool-level function to a full-device intelligent system level.
