Ma Huateng, Chairman and CEO of Tencent, made a deep response to the public's concerns about the progress and competitive situation of Tencent's AI development at yesterday's shareholders' meeting, clearly stating that Tencent's AI has gradually entered the development track.
Ma Huateng admitted that Tencent's foundational capabilities in the field of AI were not initially prominent. However, through continuous investment in areas such as talent building, team management, and internal training in recent years, it has successfully compensated for early shortcomings. When reflecting on the past path of large model development, he humorously compared it by saying that a year ago he thought "he had boarded the boat," only to find "the boat was leaking." Currently, Tencent has achieved a stable standing in the field of AI. Although there is still a distance to "sitting steadily," it is working hard to accelerate technological iteration.
In terms of strategy, Tencent has clarified an "orderly and steady" differentiated path, emphasizing that it does not blindly follow trends to seize non-advantageous areas, but instead seeks breakthroughs by leveraging its unique ecological advantages. It is reported that products such as Tencent's AI coding assistant tool CodeBuddy have established strong competitiveness in the industry, and the performance indicators of the new generation of large models are also steadily improving. Ma Huateng stated that Tencent does not pursue being the first to seize opportunities, but insists on taking the correct long-term development path.
Industry observers point out that Tencent's statement reflects the logic shift among leading internet companies in the AI competition, from "enthusiastic following" to "practical deepening." With the deepening of the trend of computing-electricity collaboration and domestic substitution, Tencent is demonstrating stronger resilience and certainty in the second half of the AI competition, thanks to the completion of its underlying infrastructure and the accumulation of core application scenarios.
