Perplexity announced that its desktop application is now available to all Mac users. The official name of the application is "Desktop," designed to provide users with the functionality of a local AI assistant to help complete daily tasks more efficiently. Unlike previous cloud computing, Desktop allows the AI assistant to directly access users' local files, applications, and the web to support complex personal workflows.

The launch of Desktop aims to meet the growing market demand for local AI assistants. Compared to tools like OpenClaw, Perplexity emphasizes the security advantages of its product to avoid potential security risks associated with elevated permissions. Although Desktop was launched last month, it was initially limited to Perplexity Max subscribers with a waitlist. Now, all Mac users can download and experience this application, but to use the Desktop features, a Pro or Max subscription is required.

Currently, the Desktop software can handle users' local files, use native Mac applications, and run online. It can also coordinate various tools and files, using over 400 connectors to fully utilize the user's personal context and operate within Perplexity's secure development environment. If used in conjunction with Perplexity's Comet browser, users can run online tools without direct connection.

In addition, Desktop is designed to run on always-on devices such as the Mac Mini, and users can remotely access it via iPhone to start tasks or approve requests at any time. This makes it more convenient and efficient for users to handle spreadsheets, documents, and various projects. Due to the full launch of Desktop, Perplexity plans to gradually discontinue its old Mac application in the coming weeks to focus on developing Desktop.

At present, this new Mac application can only be downloaded directly from the official website and is not yet available on the Mac App Store.
