Leading AI giant OpenAI has recently made a strategic adjustment to its ambitious "Stargate" infrastructure plan. According to reliable sources, the company is shifting from building large-scale data centers on its own to a more flexible computing power leasing model.

The strategic focus shifts from self-building to indirect leasing
OpenAI is currently seeking necessary computing resources through a series of large bilateral transactions to meet its growing demand for computing power. This shift means the company will reduce its investment in self-built capacity and instead indirectly obtain hardware support through its partners' infrastructure.
Specifically, OpenAI will still utilize the original "Stargate" data center site resources in Norway. However, these resources will be supplied through an indirect chain of "Nscale → Microsoft → OpenAI," rather than being operated directly by OpenAI.
Microsoft takes over key campus support for expansion
At the same time, as a core partner of OpenAI, Microsoft is actively taking over and supporting infrastructure projects affected by this plan adjustment. Microsoft has confirmed that it will take over the second phase of the Abilene campus of Crusoe Company in Texas, which was originally planned as the first expansion site of the "Stargate" project.
This adjustment reflects the AI industry's move toward more practical construction approaches under significant energy and financial pressures. Through the leasing model, OpenAI can maintain its technological leadership while quickly accessing top-tier computing resources globally.
