On April 13, according to The Information, Microsoft is planning a major strategic restructuring of 365 Copilot. A new team led by Microsoft corporate vice president Omar Shahine is exploring the integration of the core technology from the open-source AI agent OpenClaw, aiming to transform Copilot from a passive conversational assistant into an AI agent capable of running autonomously all day and handling complex tasks.
The core of this transformation involves introducing the underlying logic of OpenClaw into enterprise-level applications. OpenClaw's operational model emphasizes deep control over computer systems, allowing AI to independently perform actions like human users by gaining access and control over specific applications.
Microsoft hopes that the new version of Copilot will continuously monitor and proactively intervene in workflows in the background, rather than responding only after users issue individual commands. Specific use cases include: Copilot will be able to monitor Outlook emails and calendars in real time and automatically build a to-do list at the beginning of each day; in Excel, when a user works on a particular tab, the AI can simultaneously complete the organization and processing of related data in the background.
