Driven by Super Bowl marketing, geopolitical controversies, and the release of advanced developer tools, the number of paid consumer users of Anthropic's large model Claude has recently reached an all-time high. Analysis by third-party firm Indagari of credit card transaction data from approximately 28 million American consumers shows that Claude's paid users experienced explosive growth in early 2026, and the company confirmed that its paid subscription users have doubled this year.

This growth curve coincides closely with a series of key events. In late January, Anthropic's dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) over AI military applications became public. CEO Dario Amodei insisted on refusing to use the model for lethal autonomous actions or mass surveillance, and issued a strong statement on February 26. Despite the threat of being listed as a "supply risk" and subsequent legal action, this safety stance actually sparked a surge in civilian subscriptions. At the same time, Anthropic's Super Bowl ads ridiculing competitors' commercial strategies successfully generated brand热度, leading to a large return of existing users in February.

Aside from brand factors, product evolution is the core driving force. The developer tools Claude Code and collaboration tool Claude Cowork, launched in January, became the main drivers for subscription conversion. This week, the "Computer Use" feature with autonomous clicking and scrolling capabilities was released, combined with the mobile task allocation tool Dispatch, which again triggered a sharp increase in subscriptions.

Data shows that new subscriptions are mainly concentrated in the $20-per-month Pro tier. Although there is still a gap in overall volume compared to OpenAI, Anthropic is building strong brand loyalty in the premium consumer market through its differentiated safety stance and a series of tool-oriented product releases. Its paid user growth rate has shown the potential to challenge the existing market landscape.
