In a recent interview with the Financial Times, Yann LeCun, a pioneer in the field of artificial intelligence, made a strong criticism of Alexandr Wang, the newly appointed head of Meta's artificial intelligence laboratory. LeCun, who previously served as Meta's chief AI scientist and announced his departure in November, stated that Wang lacks sufficient experience in research and is unable to effectively lead a research team. He mentioned that although Wang has strong learning abilities and is aware of his shortcomings, his understanding of research remains immature.

The arrival of Wang is a significant move by Zuckerberg in the competition for artificial intelligence talent, as Meta invested up to $1.4 billion in his company Scale AI. However, LeCun believes this decision is risky because Wang does not fully understand the needs and preferences of research staff.

LeCun further revealed that Zuckerberg is disappointed with the performance of Meta's current AI team, especially during the development of the company's flagship open-source AI model Llama, which faced external criticism for alleged manipulation of benchmark test results. He pointed out that Mark's confidence in the existing team has been severely shaken, and he said the company's GenAI organization has been almost marginalized.

Although Wang briefly served as LeCun's superior after the restructuring, LeCun emphasized that Wang did not truly lead him. As a senior researcher, he believes he cannot be simply directed or managed. In addition, LeCun is convinced that Zuckerberg's view on the future of artificial intelligence differs from his, especially regarding the application of large language models (LLMs). He believes the current development path may be wrong and emphasizes that new approaches are needed to unlock the potential of artificial intelligence.

Finally, LeCun named his startup "Advanced Machine Intelligence" to reflect his pursuit of more advanced intelligent models. He will serve as the company's chairman, emphasizing that he is more suitable for inspiring the team rather than serving as CEO.
