According to the latest research, more than 20% of videos recommended by YouTube to new users are referred to as "AI garbage content." These contents are usually generated by artificial intelligence and mainly aimed at gaining views. The survey was conducted by the video editing company Kapwing, covering 15,000 popular YouTube channels globally, and found that 278 channels specialize in publishing AI garbage content.

The study shows that these AI garbage content channels have accumulated over 6.3 billion views and 221 million subscribers, with an estimated annual revenue of up to $117 million. This study specifically registered a new YouTube account and found that among the first 500 videos recommended on its homepage, 104 were AI garbage content. Of these 500 videos, about one-third were classified as "mindless content," which refers to low-quality videos aimed at monetizing traffic.

Globally, the audience of AI garbage content channels is expanding. For example, 20 million people in Spain follow such channels, 18 million in Egypt, 14.5 million in the United States, and 13.5 million in Brazil. The channel with the highest number of views, "Bandar Apna Dost," is located in India, focusing on adventures of a personified monkey, and its annual revenue could reach $4.25 million.

Additionally, another channel focused on children's content, "Pouty Frenchie," has also achieved great success, with an annual revenue of nearly $4 million. Despite YouTube's efforts to combat fake content, these channels still manage to gain a large number of views and followers. Researchers believe that the rise of AI garbage content has formed a semi-structured industry, and many creators are trying to profit from it using AI tools.
