According to the latest statistics from app analytics company Appfigures, since its launch in May 2023, the global user spending on the ChatGPT mobile app has successfully exceeded $3 billion, setting a new industry milestone. This data covers the cumulative spending on the app across Apple iOS and Android platforms. Notably, ChatGPT was initially released only on the iOS platform.

In 2023, the first operational year for the ChatGPT app, user spending reached $42.9 million. In 2024, this figure is expected to grow by 1036% to $487 million. According to Appfigures' forecast, user spending will further surge in 2025, reaching an estimated $2.48 billion, with an annual growth rate of 408%. This astonishing growth rate reflects the rapid increase in user acceptance and demand for ChatGPT.

ChatGPT achieved the $3 billion user spending milestone in 31 months, while the highest-grossing app globally, TikTok, took 58 months. ChatGPT's achievement also surpassed other well-known streaming apps, such as Disney+ and HBO Max, which took 42 and 46 months respectively to reach the same goal.

Although the $3 billion in user spending demonstrates consumer recognition of ChatGPT, it is not the only standard for evaluating the user penetration and long-term revenue potential of an AI application. ChatGPT's users mainly spend by purchasing paid subscription services, including a basic monthly subscription of $20 for ChatGPT Plus and a premium ChatGPT Pro package priced at $200 per month. Additionally, the app plans to introduce ad monetization models and has already launched a feature similar to an app store, which may lead to commercialization in the future.

At the same time, Google is also planning to shift its strong search advertising business into an AI-driven search field, introducing new features and embedding ads. Another AI company, Anthropic, focuses on the business market and is expected to achieve a revenue target of $70 billion by 2028.
