OpenAI is launching its latest large language model iteration - GPT-5.1, aimed at making ChatGPT a more flexible, faster responding, and highly personalized digital assistant. This update not only brings faster response times and clearer language expression, but also introduces a new conversation style that adapts to the user's interaction style.

The latest "GPT-5.1 Instant" model (gpt-5.1-chat-latest) is designed to provide a warmer, more conversational experience compared to its predecessor. OpenAI emphasizes that this model should be able to give more accurate answers and follow detailed instructions more strictly, for example, when a user asks to reply in exactly six words, the model will precisely achieve it. GPT-5.1 is also believed to handle emotional situations better, being able to sense stress or uncertainty in user conversations and respond with more empathy. This step closer to human-like responses demonstrates OpenAI's strategy of positioning ChatGPT as a true personal assistant, even betting on its future ability to compete with real-life conversations.

The GPT-5.1Thinking model (gpt-5.1) designed for more demanding reasoning and technical tasks has also undergone significant upgrades. The new version adjusts the length of time it "thinks" before answering, introducing an adaptive reasoning feature: for simple queries, GPT-5.1Thinking is about twice as fast as the previous version, allowing it to process more quickly; while for more difficult topics, it spends more time delving deeper, providing twice the level of detail (but at a slower speed).

OpenAI noted that the model has particularly improved in math and technical subjects, with explanations that are clearer and easier to understand for non-experts, aiming to make the thinking pattern more suitable for tasks such as explaining code, breaking down concepts, or analyzing economic issues. In ChatGPT, the model router ("GPT-5.1Auto") will continue to intelligently decide whether a prompt is sent to the fast instant version or the more comprehensive Thinking version. Previous GPT-5 models will remain available as legacy options for three months. Both the GPT-5.1 Instant version (gpt-5.1-chat-latest) and the GPT-5.1 Thinking version (gpt-5.1) will be available on the API this week, both featuring adaptive reasoning capabilities.

In addition to model updates, OpenAI has added powerful personalization features. Users can now choose from eight communication styles, such as professional, friendly, straightforward, quirky, efficient, geeky, and cynical, to customize how the AI responds. The ChatGPT mobile application now also allows users to select from styles such as quirky, professional, and friendly. OpenAI is also testing more granular control options, such as setting the brevity of responses or the frequency of emoji appearances. In the future, if ChatGPT detects certain prompts in a conversation, it will be able to suggest that the user switch styles.
