OpenAI released a safety standards blueprint for teenagers' use of artificial intelligence this Thursday, aiming to guide the public and lawmakers to focus on safety issues when teenagers use AI.

This blueprint was first shared with Axios, as multiple states are considering AI safety bills, especially the U.S. Senate is advancing a bill that would prohibit minors from using chatbots. At the same time, OpenAI is facing a high-profile lawsuit involving a minor's suicide, which has drawn widespread public attention to the safety measures on its platform for young users.

While promoting the application of AI technology in schools, OpenAI believes it is particularly important to establish relevant safety frameworks. The blueprint states that teenagers should be able to access AI safely and reliably, and prevent potential harm. Specifically, OpenAI suggests that ChatGPT should respond differently based on the user's age to better protect teenagers. For example, interactions between 15-year-olds and adults when using AI should be different.

In the blueprint, OpenAI outlined five specific recommendations for protecting teenagers. These include: identifying teenage users on the platform and handling them in a way appropriate for their age; through policies, prohibiting AI systems from displaying content related to suicide, self-harm, sensitive or violent material, to avoid encouraging dangerous behaviors or unrealistic body standards; defaulting to treating users under 18 if their age cannot be confirmed; providing parents with parental control tools so they can manage the usage of teenagers' accounts; and expanding protective features based on the latest research findings to safeguard teenagers' interactions with AI.

However, age verification technology still faces challenges, as many minors may easily bypass existing rules. To enhance the safety of teenage users, OpenAI is exploring various measures and hopes to encourage more families and schools to participate in the regulation and supervision of AI.
