Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has reached an agreement with the Nordic country Iceland to introduce the Claude large language model in schools in Iceland. This initiative not only injects new vitality into Iceland's education system, but also has the potential to become a blueprint for AI applications in the global education sector.

Anthropic, Claude

The core goal of this collaboration is to explore how artificial intelligence can assist teachers in lesson preparation and teaching processes. The Icelandic government stated that the plan will cover the entire country, including the capital Reykjavik and remote rural areas, and is expected to greatly benefit teachers in their educational work. Although Iceland has a population of just over 400,000, its progress in adopting technology has made it stand out among European countries.

In specific implementation, teachers will be granted access to Claude and receive corresponding training and support. Claude is not only capable of handling administrative tasks, but can also analyze complex texts and math problems, while learning each teacher's teaching style and methods. To ensure an inclusive learning environment, the project will support multiple languages, including Icelandic, aiming to protect the importance of native languages in the digital environment.

Gudmundur Ingi Kristjánsson, Minister of Education and Children's Affairs in Iceland, stated that this plan is a bold attempt to study the application of artificial intelligence in all areas of education, with the needs of teachers as the focus. Thiru Ramasamy, head of public sector at Anthropic, pointed out that this collaboration demonstrates how governments can use artificial intelligence to enhance public services while maintaining their core values.

It is currently unclear about the specific duration and cost of Iceland's pilot project, but Anthropic hopes this collaboration can serve as a starting point for other countries to implement similar projects. At the same time, OpenAI is also actively expanding, having announced the promotion of ChatGPT in Greek high schools.
