The incident happened on October 20th. Taki Allen, a student at Kenwood High School, was chatting with friends outside of school after football training. Suddenly, several police cars rushed over, and police approached them with guns drawn. Allen recalled, "About eight police cars came toward us, and the police shouted at me to lie on the ground. I was thinking, 'What's going on here?'"

Under the threat of the police, Allen was forced to kneel down, his hands cuffed behind his back, and he felt extremely scared, thinking he might be in danger of losing his life. After that, the police searched him but found no weapons. Later, the police showed Allen the AI surveillance footage that triggered the alarm, which showed that the corn chip bag in his pocket was mistakenly identified as a gun.

The AI system that caused this misjudgment was developed by Omnilert company. This system was introduced to Baltimore County public schools last year to monitor campus safety in real-time. When an object that is considered a weapon appears in the surveillance footage, the system immediately alerts law enforcement. In this incident, the corn chip bag in Allen's pocket was incorrectly identified as a gun due to the position of his fingers. Although Omnilert admitted it was a false alarm, they argued that the system was "working as expected," and its purpose was to prioritize safety.

This incident has raised public concerns about the accuracy and safety of AI monitoring technology, especially in school environments.
