Recently, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company xAI officially launched a $80 million wastewater treatment plant construction project in Memphis, Texas. The project aims to alleviate the pressure on local aquifers and address the drinking water shortage in Memphis through sewage recycling and reuse.

The wastewater treatment plant will use the world's largest ceramic membrane membrane bioreactor (MBR), equipped with 13,000 membrane modules. The facility's total area exceeds 900,000 square feet, approximately 83,613 square meters, equivalent to the size of 16 football fields.

The treatment plant will have a daily processing capacity of about 493 million liters, and the treated water will mainly be used for industrial cooling by xAI and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). The project is expected to save about 1.8925 billion liters of drinking water annually, which will effectively reduce the burden on Memphis' main water supply system and improve local water resource management efficiency.

This project is a rare water recycling initiative supported by private funding, with all construction costs borne by xAI. Through its affiliated company CTC Property LLC, xAI submitted the preliminary planning for the project in 2024, demonstrating its long-term commitment to sustainable infrastructure in the Memphis area. Don Moul, CEO of the Tennessee Valley Authority, expressed high expectations for the project, stating that it will not only reduce the local demand for drinking water but also protect the community's water resources and promote environmental sustainability.
