OpenAI is returning to the field of robotics research, marking the company's renewed focus on physical artificial intelligence (AI) after a five-year hiatus. According to Wired magazine, OpenAI is hiring individuals specializing in humanoid robot research, aiming to create robots capable of performing general tasks through remote operation and simulation training.

According to the job postings, the newly established team will focus on sensing and prototyping, with the ultimate mission of creating a "general-purpose robot" to accelerate the realization of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Although the company has not officially confirmed whether the project targets humanoid robots, various signs suggest that its research direction is closely related to human-like systems. New team members include Stanford University researcher Chen-Shu Lee, who previously focused on benchmarking for household humanoid robots, further supporting this speculation.
As early as 2020, OpenAI had paused its robot research due to insufficient training data. However, the company released multiple robot-related job postings this January, indicating that with technological and data advancements, OpenAI is now ready to restart this important project and continue exploring AI applications in the physical world.
