Amazon established the Alexa Fund in 2015, initially focused on supporting early-stage voice technology startups. With the rise of large language models and Amazon's launch of the generative AI-powered Alexa+, the fund has expanded its investment scope to focus more broadly on AI startups.
Paul Bernard, head of the Alexa Fund, stated that with the rapid advancement of AI, the fund's mission has evolved beyond its initial focus on voice technology, now encompassing areas such as AI hardware and smart assistants.

Bernard noted, "While the Alexa Fund's mission has evolved over time, the rapid advancement of AI has provided us with a key inflection point, allowing the fund to embrace new technologies while serving its original mission." He also mentioned that the fund is currently investing in startups driving advancements in AI hardware, generative media, smart assistants, and emerging AI architectures.
Currently, the Alexa Fund has invested in four emerging companies spanning diverse areas:
First is NinjaTech AI, a full-stack AI company offering a chatbot capable of generating code, images, and videos, conducting in-depth research, and scheduling meetings for users. The platform is similar to other AI assistant platforms like Quora's Poe and leverages Amazon's AWS infrastructure.
Next is Hedra, an AI media company enabling users to generate images, audio, and video through its studio. Hedra recently launched its Character-3AI, focusing on content creation across various formats. Last year, the company raised $10 million from investors including a16z Games Speedrun, Abstract, and Index Ventures.
Third is Ario, an AI-powered application centered around home management, designed to handle daily scheduling and tasks. Ario developed a school email decoder capable of creating events and to-dos from school communications. Bernard praised the app for its ability to understand the personal context behind tasks.
Finally, HeyBoss focuses on "ambient programming," allowing users to create websites, applications, games, or prototypes simply through descriptions. This area also sees other startups emerging, such as Cursor, Lovable, Replit, and Bolt.new.
For Amazon, these startups not only leverage its cloud computing and AI technologies but also provide a testing ground. Many startups gain prioritized access to Amazon's private APIs and SDKs, along with executive support and opportunities to collaborate with Amazon's business units.
